A Tax Consultant provides expert advice on tax matters to individuals and businesses. They help clients understand and comply with tax laws, minimize tax liabilities legally, prepare and review tax returns, and represent clients in dealings with tax authorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review tax returns for individuals and/or businesses
  • Provide tax planning advice to minimize tax liabilities within legal frameworks
  • Research and interpret tax legislation, regulations, and rulings
  • Identify tax saving opportunities and tax-efficient structures
  • Assist with tax compliance and ensure deadlines are met
  • Represent clients during tax audits and in dealings with SARS
  • Prepare tax opinions and advice on complex tax matters
  • Stay updated on changes in tax laws and regulations
  • Conduct tax health checks and risk assessments
  • Advise on implications of business decisions from a tax perspective
  • Assist with objections and appeals against tax assessments
  • Develop tax strategies aligned with client business objectives
  • Collaborate with other professionals (accountants, lawyers, financial advisors)
  • Educate clients on tax obligations and reporting requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field
  • Professional tax qualification or accounting designation (CA(SA), SAICA Tax Specialist, MCom Taxation)
  • 3+ years of experience in tax consulting or related tax field
  • Strong knowledge of South African tax legislation (Income Tax, VAT, CGT, etc.)
  • Understanding of tax compliance requirements and deadlines
  • Experience with tax returns preparation and submission
  • Research skills and ability to interpret tax legislation
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good communication and client relationship skills

Preferred Skills

  • Master’s degree in Taxation
  • Specialized knowledge in specific tax areas (international tax, transfer pricing, etc.)
  • Experience with tax technology and software
  • Industry-specific tax experience (mining, financial services, etc.)
