As a Publishing Intern, you’ll shadow experienced professionals and actively contribute to team meetings and publishing projects. This immersive experience is designed to equip you with practical skills and industry insights while supporting Jonathan Ball Publishers in their mission to produce exceptional books for readers everywhere.
Key Responsibilities
As part of your internship, you will:
- Assist in Project Management: Work alongside publishers to manage book projects and ensure their successful completion.
- Support Administrative Tasks: Format manuscripts, compile catalogues, and take notes during submissions meetings.
- Contribute to Digital Publishing: Check audio and e-books after receiving the necessary training.
- Evaluate Submissions: Review new manuscripts and draft reader reports on request.
This role is both diverse and rewarding, offering exposure to the entire publishing lifecycle, from manuscript evaluation to final production.

Educational Background
- Tertiary qualification in publishing, languages, journalism, or translation, with a strong interest in writing and editing.
Skills and Competencies
- Exceptional communication skills in English and Afrikaans (both written and verbal).
- Strong writing, copy-editing, and organizational abilities.
- A proactive approach with a keen eye for detail and a can-do attitude.
- Ability to multitask and perform under tight deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- A genuine interest in book publishing and a love for reading.
Eligibility
- Must be a South African citizen with availability to work in Cape Town during normal office hours.
- Submissions without a cover letter and academic transcripts will not be considered.
