Job Overview
The General Assistant is a foundational role within the store, acting as the heartbeat of daily operations. This position is ideal for individuals who are energetic, eager to learn, and passionate about customer service. The role offers much more than just shelf-stocking or cashier duties—it is a comprehensive introduction to the retail world.
General Assistants are the first point of contact for customers, setting the tone for a positive shopping experience. They are responsible for everything from helping customers locate products and explaining their use, to ensuring the store environment is clean, organized, and inviting. Their support is crucial across departments—from fresh produce to the bakery, from checkout counters to storerooms.
This role also acts as a stepping stone into more specialized or senior positions within the company. With a proactive attitude and consistent performance, General Assistants are frequently considered for advancement into roles such as Supervisor, Sales Floor Assistant, Cash Office Clerk, and even Department Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet and assist customers in a friendly, professional manner
- Provide accurate product information and demonstrate basic usage where necessary
- Promote sales and in-store promotions
- Process cash/card payments, issue receipts, and handle returns/exchanges
- Unpack deliveries and ensure accurate stock placement
- Keep shelves neat, fully stocked, and correctly priced
- Ensure store cleanliness, especially in high-traffic and storage areas
- Participate in regular stock takes and assist with inventory accuracy
- Follow store procedures and safety protocols, including emergency procedures
Minimum Requirements
- Matric (Grade 12)
- Previous experience in a similar role (General Assistant, Clerk, Retail Worker)
- Fluent in English
- Reside within 25km of the store
- Must have a clean criminal record
Preferred (Not Mandatory)
- South African citizenship preferred
- Experience using a POS system or cash register
- Previous customer service experience
- Familiarity with stock take processes
